CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Sienna wasn't sure what to expect as she and Alex arrived at the offices of Laura Gibson. The police chief had given her no information besides the fact that the lawyer was missing, but even that information was enough to send an undercurrent of fear running through her.
On another day, someone going missing could have meant any number of things. It could simply mean that they hadn't checked in with their friends and family in a while. It could mean that they had gotten lost somewhere on one of the trails around Aspen. This would often be more of a matter for mountain rescue than it would be for the police. Here and now though with the killer on the loose, the news was worrying.
The offices were a relatively old-fashioned building, which looked as if it had been built 50 years or more ago. It had obviously being updated since then, though, the facade pristine and the entry way sportingan up to date security system. Someone was obviously watching on the other end of that security system because, as Sienna and Alex approached the door, it swung open to allow them in.
The interior of the offices was bright, modern and professional, the walls painted in soothing, warm hues, a number of comfortable looking chairs set in a waiting area with a reception desk in front of it. The TV screen held rolling news, and Sienna couldn't help noticing that the main story appeared to be about the murders in Aspen. The tagline running along the bottom of the screen read Aspen women panic as killer targets the wealthy.
A man in his 20s was standing by that reception desk. He was possibly a little shorter than Alex, with short blond hair, blue eyes and glasses. He was wearing a dark blue suit with dress shoes that presumably wouldn't have done well in the snow. Sienna suspected that he probably changed into these clothes here at work.
âHi,â he said nervously. âThank you for coming so quickly. Iâm Timothy Mathers. Laura Gibson is my boss.â
âWe're here to help,â Alex said in a reassuring tone. He always seemed to be good at getting people to calm down. Perhaps it was a hangover from his medical past, dealing with injured soldiers who needed to be kept calm while he treated them.
Sienna glanced at the news report again, wondering if she'd done the right thing by talking to Justine. There was a risk that in doing so she was helping to spread panic among the women of Aspen. She hoped not. Maybe the reports would encourage people to be careful. The one thing she didn't want was an exodus of wealthy women from Aspen in the middle of a polar vortex.
âYou reported your boss missing, is that correct?â Sienna said.
She saw Timothy nod. âThat's right. She isn't answering her phone. It hasn't been long, but she always answers her phone. She only went out to meet with the other side in a case weâre litigating. She should have been back by now.
